Jozy Altidore announced in his ESPNFC.com blog that he'll wear special-edition adidas F50 TRF FG boots in honor of former U.S. Under-17 teammate Kirk Urso when the U.S. takes on Mexico in Columbus Tuesday night at 8 p.m.

Urso died on Aug. 5, 2012 from a heart defect. He was sidelined from his rookie season at the time.

¡°I thought honoring Kirk on the field he once played on in what will probably go down as the biggest match in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying history would be a great way to remember him and generate awareness toward what caused him to be taken from us all far too soon,¡± Altidore wrote in his blog.

Altidore will sign the boots after the USA-Mexico match and auction them off in a raffle. Tickets can be bought (http://www.thecrew.com/ursofund) for $15 each or four for $50.



Proceeds benefit the Jozy Altidore Foundation and the Kirk Urso Memorial Fund, which raises money for heart health research.

This is not the first time Altidore has used his cleats to help benefit others.  While playing at AZ Alkmaar last season he inked the names of the 20 students and six teachers killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on a pair of his cleats.

The tribute was ¡®to show I'm thinking of everyone in Newtown and back home.¡¯

The record setting forward is with the U.S. national team preparing for the two upcoming World Cup qualifiers on Friday and Tuesday against Costa Rica and Mexico, respectively.  Altidore was cleared to resume workouts Tuesday but is not training at full speed.

It is hard to imagine that head coach Jurgen Klinsmann will not call on the Sunderland player. Altidore has scored in his last five matches for the United States, becoming the only player in U.S. history to accomplish this feat.
